Our History

1959

Charles L. (Buddy) Whitt and Jack Clifton decided to move their families back home and start their own flooring business as partners.  Whitt & Clifton began on April 1 of that year bringing never before seen innovation in the flooring business to the Salem-Roanoke area.  The partners showed home builders of that day how they could save money by allowing Whitt & Clifton to install the hardwood floors; a task that was performed at that time by carpenters.

In 1966, the entrepreneurial bug bit both partners and they decided to form separate companies.  Whitt Floor & Tile was formed that year. Innovation as a flooring dealer continued for the Whitt family.  When technology in the carpet industry made carpet an affordable option to many, Whitt Floor & Tile was among the first dealers in the Roanoke Valley to train installers to handle this emerging product.  The Whitt family was among the first to become a full service dealer offering carpet, resilient, ceramic tile, and wood flooring services.Image Alt Text

1970's

In 1971, Whitt Floor & Tile incorporated and became known as Whitt Carpet & Tile Service, Inc.  February of 1973 proved to be a time of change as Buddy went to be with the Lord, and his wife, Veta, took the reins.  As president of Whitt Carpet & Tile, Veta became a driving force in a male-dominated industry.   At that time, this made Veta one of the few women to own and operate a successful business in the Salem-Roanoke area.  In 1976, after receiving a B.S. Degree in Building Construction from Virginia Tech, Charles Whitt, Jr. joined his mother at Whitt Carpet, becoming a full-time employee at the company he grew up in.

1980's

The 1980s saw innovation through diversification for Whitt Carpet & Tile.  As the commercial construction market expanded, the company grasped the opportunity and increased its focus to include building relationships with General Contractors, Architects and Interior Designers.  This resulted in growing the commercial side of the business. Homeowners were beginning to remodel and Whitt Carpet & Tile saw growth in the residential replacement business as well.

1990's - 2000's

More change was seen in 1991 as Whitt Carpet joined the Carpet One family of independent flooring retailers.  This gave the dealership purchasing power of over 1,000 stores as a member of a buying cooperative.  As time progressed, flooring innovations brought change to the residential landscape.  Whitt Carpet One helped introduce new flooring systems to the Roanoke Valley with laminate floors in 1996 and fiber floor products in 2003.

2000's - 2010's

Continuing the family tradition, Charles’ wife, Debbie, joined the business in 2003. The Whitt family continues to innovate as a flooring dealer. In 2010, Whitt Carpet One Floor & Home updated and expanded its showroom making it a “Destination Carpet One” store to better serve customers. The dealership is diverse in its product offering as well as its client base, working on projects large or small, residential or commercial.
